I keep getting marginally disturbing phone calls, like the protagonist does in the play I'm having put on now. I guess someone liked the showing? At any rate... if people creeper at me, I'd prefer if they used a little bit of creativity. Don't recycle my own fictional material. That's tacky.

Victor has grown intellectually fat and happy with the idea that she doesn't die when bad things happen. That's probably why this time (this one time) she PINpointed without triple-checking her coordinates.

And ended up in the ocean.

In a full suit.

She kicks to stay afloat, kicks hard, but the waves aren't kiddy pool style, and she's very scared in that overwhelmed way that some people get when they're in something so much bigger than they are. She blindly searches for the default button, but instead of the default button, she hit something else (a scrambler? a last-four-digits-switcher?) and thwump. Now she's in an office. Drippingly, soppingly wet, nose burning with salt, and choking. She smells like ocean and wet wool. She is also missing a loafer.

I'm out because a friend of mine pulled me out of bed, slung me over his shoulder, and took me shopping for a sword on an alien planet.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, but now I have a sword.

Today, Victor feels like a video game character. Objective: save the person who ambiguously may or may not still be her boyfriend. Health: ninety-two. Energy: eighty, not including the adrenaline bonus.

She's PINned herself into the middle of a busy street. A man in a backwards New Haven Hornets cap bumps into her, and for a moment (just a moment) she closes her eyes and allows herself to feel completely overwhelmed. Then she flips her phone open, speeddials number three. "I'm here, corner of...." She sucks in another deep breath, looks up, scanning for street signs. "Smith and Saint George's."

J bet me that everyone thought that I was very innocent and childish, and he polled the Nexus. I'm convinced that the votes were at least partially coerced.

That punk.

(Get it? Ironic name-calling.
I woke up this morning, slipped out of bed and went to get something to drink, only to find a half-naked man in the kitchen. Thankfully I knew this half-naked man, and he was there for a reason (that reason was not me.) It was still distressing. J startled the heck out of me on my birthday.

That's right, twenty-one years old. If you had told me five years ago that I'd make it to this age, I would have laughed at you. Politely, of course. I'm just thrilled to still be around!

She set aside the manuscript she was translating and tossed on the nearest suit jacket she could find (it did not belong to her.) Before she left her room, she grabbed her backpack and threw a hat onto her head.

Three minutes before noon, she PINed into the Nexus.

Two minutes before noon, she dashed to the restaurant.

One minute before noon she slid into the establishment, a rounded place that would look like a fifties diner if the walls weren't made of fabric and the checkerboard pattern wasn't on the ceiling. She looked around for Gabriel.

My boss told me I had to take my sick leave. I'm not sick, by the way, but since I work at a hospital for a doctor he thinks he can tell me when I'm sick. And I'm not.

I found a nice synagogue in Langley.

This post is brought to you by the number fourteen. Fourteen, the number of days before I turn twenty-one. When I'm twenty-one, I can stop using my friend's slightly psychic paper as my fake ID. I don't even drink, I just want to go places.

Don't worry, citizens, I'm taking lowering doses of caffeine pills so my head doesn't explode.

I'm going to help her out.

I'm actually really ridiculously happy right now.
insane character survey

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is she heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Victor is short, around 5'2'' and on the average side of thin. More wiry than wimpy now.

2. How old is she?
Two whole decades!

3. Describe her posture. Does she carry herself well or does she slouch?
She still has that teenage slouch going on a lot of the time, this sheepish sort of shuffling. She lounges, takes up as much space as possible, very masculine. Unless she's uncomfortable, injured, or talking to someone who she respects/is intimidated by, then she's sitting up straight as a board.

4. How is her health? Is she fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
She's fit, if only because of the heroing. Before that the most exercise she did was to grab paint and run downstairs for more coffee. She worked out hard before she started patrolling.

5. How does she move? Is she clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
It depends! She's awkward in her own skin, twitchy, but she has a way of throwing herself around. Flopping onto couches. She's nervous, but she's careless with her motions. It's like if you gave the village klutz ballet training. They'd know the stuff, maybe they can even imitate it, but they'll still be a klutz.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does she perceive herself in the mirror?
She's pretty, in an ordinary way. She thinks she's awkward and silly-looking, though. She doesn't look in the mirror much.

7. Describe her complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
She's pale. Before the heroing thing, she stayed inside or in the Nexus most of the time. She actually started wearing a mask so she could be braver by pretending to be braver. Anyway, she's covered mostly always. She's pretty scarred too. She lives hard, plays hard, and other than her face and neck... she looks like she tried to arm-wrestle a blender. She has a scar on her right palm, a defensive wound from patrolling, and that's sometimes visible. She also has one on her collarbone, sneaking up to her neck, from the same patrol. And there's a lot of others. Lots and lots. Of all colors and shapes and sizes. It's not something she advertises, though.

8. Describe her hair: color, texture, style.
She has brown hair, and it's always disheveled and kind of tangled, sticking up oddly. Wild. Split ends. She wears a bowler hat a lot. Her hair is long enough to brush past her collar, long enough to get pulled into a ponytail.

9. What color are her eyes?
Dark brown.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
She has a pretty graceful-looking neck.

11. What are her chief tension centers?
"A lot" would be a wrong answer, but it's true. The girl sleeps curled around heating pads to help relax her body. She's a twitchy little critter.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does she have six of the same suit?
Casual, usually, with as many bright colors and designs as she can cram onto her body. She loves multicolored scarves, almost always wears her bowler, and is rarely (if ever) seen without long sleeves. She favors men's clothing over women's, and she crossdresses sometimes. When she crossdresses, she favors suits.

13. Do her clothes fit well? Does she seem comfortable in them?
Her clothes don't fit her well at all. Almost everything is too big, worn like an afterthought. She's determined to cover up and hide her body. She's uncomfortable in her own skin, but she loves her big sweaters.

14. Does she dress the same on the job as she does in her free time? If not, what are the differences?
When she's heroing, she has a costume. It's a goofy costume, but it suits her purpose. If she were supposed to be Batman-ish and scary she'd wear something dark and loomy, but she's a jokester and she's really there to help and not intimidate. She wears a plague doctor mask, leather and metal. She also wears a short green wig with armoring under it. A labcoat with tons of pockets for tons of gadgets (most from the Nexus) as well as chewing gum, first-aid kits, post-it notes, and newspaper clippings folded into neat little squares. She has a 'trust me I'm a doctor' shirt, and that's all worn over fabric armoring gotten via Nexus. She has a jetpack.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxers, all the way. She has a few pairs of Batman boxers, I ♥ New York boxers, and goofy cartoon boxers. As well as all the normal colors, barring yellow and pink and orange.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Victor's voice is low, but not too low for a girl. Tenor, androgynous. Sometimes her voice slips up high-pitched, especially if she's upset or mocking someone, or uncertain.

2. How does she normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does she talk easily, or does she hesitate?
She speaks quickly, yammers. A lot of gesturing. Sometimes the words spill out, and sometimes she stumbles, but she's almost always enthusiastic.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
She has a Southern accent. Texan. But it's muted now. A lot of 'oh dear' and 'oh gosh' and 'dude' and 'concurrence.' She pulls out some 'darlin'' and some 'honeysweetheartbaby.'

4. What language/s does she speak, and with how much fluency?
She speaks some decent Spanish and Italian, and she tried to learn Romanian, Russian, French, and Latin. She can't speak the last four at all, can only sometimes understand Romance languages because of what she knows from Spanish and Italian. She's also in the process of learning a few alien languages, but with Victor's attention span, who knows?

5. Does she switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
She sure doesn't! However, when she's joking, she drawls but doesn't slur. When she's joking she overspeaks really really slowly, pronouncing every consonant crisply.

6. Is she a good impromptu speaker, or does she have to think about her words?
She's good at babbling. Thinking helps, but she's more of an on-the-fly person.

7. Is she eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
She's an actress. She's somewhere between the two. She's no Othello, but she's not incapable of speechifying. It all depends on the situation.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is she book-smart or street-smart?
She's bright. Very bright. Overcompensatingly bright, bordering on paranoid. She doesn't feel smart. She desperately learns things, like she's on a timer, loves research, loves school. So a lot of it is book-smart, and it's some street-smart. When she's dealing with her alter-identity with people from her world, she lies in interviews, fabricates aspects of her mask's personality so that if the cops did have a running list of qualities and traits she knew that they were following a few false leads. She never logged on to the same computer when she was posting hero-stuff twice, never in the same internet cafe, never in one that had a surveillance camera.

2. Does she think on her feet, or does she need time to deliberate?
She thinks pretty well on her feet. She's good at getting out of problems.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is she more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
A mix of all these things. She doesn't have a realistic worldview, at all, and she knows it. She uses logic, but Viclogic is not always Worldlogic and she's impulsive. One one hand, she feels like anyone within the bounds of the AVF is fair game to talk to with no danger to herself, but on the other hand she doesn't go anywhere without at least five PINpoints.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
She's going into her senior year in college. She enrolled in another Nexus-based school to get a degree in being a hero.

5. What are her areas of expertise? What, if anything, is she interested in learning more about?
She is interested in learning everything unless it relates to copulation or nudity. She's interested in learning medical things, art, art history, engineering, anything involving robots, any sort of history, alien cultures, earth cultures, multiple universes and how they fit together, comic book physics, regular physics, poetry, the evolution of language, literary evolution, biological evolution, the list goes on and on and on. She knows a lot about a lot.

6. Is she an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is she even-tempered or does she have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
She's cheerful, almost always really wired off of coffee. Laid back and driven, very happy usually. She's mellow about other people's actions, but she's frantic to learn.

8. How does she respond to new people or situations? Is she suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
One, two, and four! She'll keep information from strangers or relative strangers, but she's honestly not built for secreting at people. She's good at it because she's paranoid, but before she became a hero it was a general rule of hers to be completely honest about herself.

9. Is she more likely to act, or to react?
Both, because I don't know if one is possible without the other.

10. Which is her default: fight or flight?
Flight. A lot of flight.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does she appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
All of those! She has a pretty dark and eccentric sense of humor, and she loves to laugh.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does she deal with them?
She sure doesn't.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined her as a person?
Victor hung out with the guys when she was young, riding bikes, and nearly everything she learned in life she learned from that.
Lesson one: don't wimp out when you have a skinned knee. And for heaven's sake, never whine, not about anything. If you look tough, people respect you.
Lesson two: don't try too hard.
Lesson three: coast down the hills.
Lesson four: people sometimes laugh at things that aren't funny. Learn to expect this. Learn to laugh with them.
Lesson five: always look both ways before crossing the street.

14. What does she fear?
Blood, dead things, decay, physical nonplatonic affection, animals with teeth and claws. Nudity. Losing control. Butterflies. You know, the normal stuff.

15. What are her hopes or aspirations?
She wants to cram a whole lot of living into her life. She wants to be published, and she wants to explore.

16. What is something she doesn't want anyone to find out about her?
Her real name is Adeline Stein.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with her parents.
She grew up in a very artsy, brainy household, and now she lives offworld from her homeworld. She doesn't visit her parents as often as she should.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
She has an older sister. Not a great relationship, because teeny Vicky got pushed around a lot. She doesn't see it as abuse, just normal sibling stuff, but she got pretty hurt rather repeatedly. A lot of it is emotional, and it's added up to her feeling of low self-worth.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom she is close? Are there ones she can't stand?
She's not really much of a family person, though she tries. She likes the idea of family.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom she considers part of her family? What are her relationships with them?
Oh yes. There's Rico, who's like an older brother. Liam, also like an older brother who sometimes buys her stuff. Alexa, like her honorary big bro even though she's not a dude. The Doctor is like a father (in most regenerations.) Billy is another brother, her other half, geeky like her. Really, the list goes on and on. She has a lot of male influences in her life that she's incredibly emotionally close with.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
She has a lot. I suppose right now... it's her boyfriend, Cole. They met because he's Liam's brother, and Liam gave her a place to crash after a difficult time. She took the couch. And it's kind of funny, they skipped a whole lot of steps in their relationship. Living together, to friends, to heroing partners, to dating. Horribly out of order, all of it.

6. Does she have other close friends?
She has a lot. She gets really connected to people, really fast.

7. Does she make friends easily, or does she have trouble getting along with people?
She makes friends really easily.

8. Which does she consider more important: family or friends?
Friends.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has she been married more than once?
Dating, and she's never been married.

10. Is she currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
It depends on how you define romantic! But she's in a relationship with her heroing partner.

11. Who was her first crush? Who is her latest?
Her first crush was a little boy in her kindergarten class who didn't laugh at her when she told everyone that a human heart was the size of a fist and it didn't look like ♥. Her latest crush is Cole. Her play crush is Hamlet, and her actor crush is Charlie Chaplin.

12. What does she look for in a romantic partner?
Geniuses, usually. Male. Funny. Respectful of boundaries.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does she relate to them? If no, does she want any?
She'd like children, but she's not sure how she's going to acquire one. And she's not ready to have kids. She did make two little clay living creatures, who are practically her kids. One is a tentacle critter about the size of a baseball with eight eyes, no mouth, and no legs or fingers. It's incredibly brightly colored. The other is a little person, slightly taller than a paperback book. He asks a lot of questions, and he's generally a good person.

14. Does she have any rivals or enemies?
Oh yes. But she doesn't see them that way. She just sees them as people who she sometimes doesn't agree with.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does she fall on the Kinsey scale?
She's straight-asexual. She likes guys, but the idea of sex with anyone is... incomprehensible to her. For one, it sounds gross and embarrassing and pretty much like the worst thing ever. For another, she can't wrap her mind around the idea that people actually want to do this thing. It's bizarre, and unsanitary, and hormones are no excuse.

16. How does she feel about sex? How important is it to her?
The above answer covered her little rant. The idea of it is important, only because it adds a lot of strain to any romantic relationship she has. She ends up feeling guilty because she doesn't sleep with people. Hell, she thinks kissing is weird and gross too. She thinks it shouldn't be important, at all.

17. What are her turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Zero. Not applicable. Also not applicable.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does she fit type?
She's a Cancer, under Western astrology. She fits in that she's one great big person-shaped contradiction sometimes. She's not particularly feminine, though.
She's a dragon! She's not very much like that sign at all. She's not particularly strong or domineering or noble or... yeah, pretty much zero dragony traits.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in her life?
She's sort of religious, and very spiritual. She's pretty into inner peace, and that means a lot to her.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
She doesn't care what other people do, but her own code is very do-no-harm-ever. She'll patch up killers if they're hurt, make smalltalk with villains if she's in the anti-violence field. If it's a hurt-or-hurt choice she might be able to compromise her morality, but likely her head will either explode, or she'll come up with another solution at the last second, or she'll do nothing at all and hide.

4. How does she regard beliefs that differ from hers? Is she tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
She's tolerant to a ridiculous fault.

5. What prejudices does she hold? Are they irrational or does she have a good reason for them?
She's not prejudiced, against anyone.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is she rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
She grew up middle class, and she's comfortable now because Liam is rich as all heck. He's a villain!

2. What is her social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected her?
She's run the gamut. Middle class, to couch surfing, to crashing out in a palace that definitely doesn't belong to her. It hasn't affected her. She's the same old her.

3. Where does she live? House, apartment, trailer? Is her home her castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does she share it with others?
She lives in an apartment, and it's a really nice place. She shares it with Liam and his brother (and her boyfriend) Cole. And she loves it there. It's home.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does she spend her money on?
Art supplies, books, robot research.

5. What does she do for a living? Is she good at it? Does she enjoy it, or would she rather be doing something else?
She's a hero, and she's good at it. She cheats with tons of gadgets, a great partner, and a media system that eats up everything about heroes. She's also an adventurer, she travels around and takes notes. She also works in a hospital as a general go-get-me-coffee person and comforter. (Off the books, she's learning medicine. She's not going to be a doctor, but she wants to know, and she fills notebooks with what she's learning. Color-coded notebooks, yellow for liver problems, green for spleen, red for heart, blue for lungs. She brainstorms well, too, and she brings the Dean of Medicine flowers.) She loves her work, all of it.

6. What are her interests or hobbies? How does she spend her free time?
She doesn't have much free time anymore, but she spends it with art or bouncing between her jobs.

7. What are her eating habits? Does she skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
She doesn't drink alcohol or do drugs, but she drinks ridiculous amounts of coffee a day. She eats a lot of candy and mircrowavable junk when she has to cook, but when she doesn't have to make an effort she eats pretty healthy.

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is her favorite:

1. Color? All of them.
2. Smell? Lavender, Irish Spring soap, Right Guard, Suave for men.
3. Time of day? Three in the morning when only infomercials are on and the coffee is cold.
4. Season? Spring. And fall.
5. Book? Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin
6. Music? I associate reggae with her, but she likes most music.
7. Place? On the rooftops of buildings at any time of day.
8. Substance? That weird green putty gloop that you get in those plastic eggs.
9. Plant? She thinks that Venus flytraps are the coolest things ever.
10. Animal? Robot puppies.

END
{{ Get the HTML here so you can do it yourself. }}

I love what I do, very nearly everything I do. I figure if you can't wake up and enjoy what you have planned every single day, then there needs to be a change. Simple as that. There's no need for the world to be a dark and oppressive place. It's just a place.

I finished my finals.

Completely unrelated: tell me this isn't awesome. (Because I'm pretty sure it is!)

What really gets me about King Lear isn't the main plot. Because, let's face it, Cordelia should have played the game and Lear doesn't need a hundred soldiers. And Lear should have planned for a house so he's not pinballing between sisters with an army. Common sense. It's the father/son plot that's the tearjerker.

Gloucester didn't believe that Edgar was planning against him because he thought his son hated him. He believed Edmund's false story about Edgar because it honestly never crossed his mind that Edmund would lie. He never saw it coming. He had absolute faith in people, unquestioning belief. And that, I think, is the heartbreaking part about King Lear.

A friend of mine thinks that I'm getting morbid, and he wants me to see a shrink. Yeah, when that happens Mephistopheles will be ice skating with Beelzebub 'round the third circle.

School. School school school. I have a teacher who's giving me trouble. I honestly think he hates me, and that's not just youthful whinefesting, I have Reason To Believe. I've never had a teacher hate me before.

Everything else is fantastic! Life is beautiful. I need to buy more notebooks.

Tacked onto Doc's bulletin board in the Nexus is the following interview.

Interviewer: We're here with Doc, one half of Langley's favorite (and only) hero team. You seem unruffled, in all of your talks with us. What (if anything) are you scared of?

Doc: What am I scared of, right now? I'm going to be in a play in about a month, and I get miserable stage fright.

Interviewer: Hahah-- wait. Really?

Doc: Yes. True as some universal unobjective truth!

Interviewer: Which play?

Doc: Romeo and Juliet. But I'm not playing who you think.

Interviewer: Who are you playing?

Doc: I'll give you a hint. [she reaches up, taps her mask] I wear beetle-brows.

Interviewer: It's been a while since I've read that play.

Doc: You ought to reread it. Shakespeare's fantastic. So sayth the Disney corporation.

Interviewer: What is that supposed to mean?

Doc: Iago. Sebastian. Ariel. The Lion King is practically an anthropomorphized Hamlet.

Interviewer: Do you consider yourself a role-model?

Doc: Gosh. That's a loaded question. People are complex. One person can't be a role-model. That's oversimplification. And I'm not perfect. I say stupid things sometimes, I make mistakes, I forget birthdays, I get stage fright. But I feel like... I feel like if someone does take something away from what I'm doing, that it should be to treat other people well. And to always wear stockings with skirts. Actually... not the second one, that's not a real lesson, that's a joke lesson. It's just that I'm old-fashioned, I guess. Eat your vegetables. Stay in school.

Continued on page 4

I can't fit anything else into my life. Despite this, I'm trying out for "Romeo and Juliet." I want to be Mercutio.

I mean. Seriously:
<lj-embed id="3" />

This is how I'd want to die, if I don't get vaporized or turned into a cyborg or something. I want to go out making people laugh. Besides, the Queen Mab speech rocks my world.

I'm not a fan of the phrase "going green" for several reasons. Reason one: it makes me want to paint people and I'm a creature of very little self-control. Reason two: it makes me think of the Hulk. Every. Time. Reason three: you can't go a color. Unless it's pink, via excess blood to the epidermal area, or black and blue via excess fists to the face. The body does not work like that.

Classes started, and I wish they hadn't. I love school, don't get me wrong I'm a geekling through and through. It's just a lot of work, and I'm already doing a lot with my time.

I'm building installation art, adventuring, popping into hospitals to hug doctors, and I'm also scrapbooking. I'm a very busy person.

Jeff Goldblum in the seventies/eighties is painfully pretty. Citation: Annie Hall. All counterarguments are unacceptable.

Teach me things, please, oh brilliant people of the multiverse. (Flattery? Anyone?)

This is the year of amazing things. I'm undertaking the most epic art project I've ever attempted. Bigger than the opera. Bigger than any mural.

There is a clay that becomes alive upon the completion of a sculpture.

I went to an alien club and got hit on. I never get hit on. It was awkward. I didn't really know what to say. I think I stumbled through something like, "You seem very nice, but I think I'm going to stay here. I'm here with a friend. A tall, male friend."

((Break it down. Stop, Drabbletime!))

Victor played the part of the littlest Saint Nick in the drag show/pageant that went on this past weekend in the community center. It was the first drag show that she had been in that she actually needed to apply blush, to get that rosy-cheeked look. She pulled on a cap to hold her hair up and tugged a Santa hat low over her ears, looking askance in the mirror.

She spent the evening dancing on stage in a red suit coat and a pair of red corduroys and a fake beard. Her other job was to hand out holiday candy to the audience, in red and green foil wrappers. She also had two lines, which went thusly: "Even though I am the littlest Santa Claus and clearly wimpy compared to the more rotund Santa Clauses, I think that I might do a darn good job at Christmasing! Don't you?" (Her performance was flawless.)

She loved to pretend to be someone else for a while, to know that underneath the makeup and the synthetic white hair she was still herself. It gave her a chance to be braver, and bigger, and bolder. She could act like a goofball without ramifications, and she got a secret glee out of the thought that people who met her that night wouldn't recognize her later. Even though her stomach felt achy in the way that she liked to call the "stage-fright wobblies" she ended the evening just as dorky and generally content as when she started it.

Victor was pretty thrilled when the drag show organizers told her she could keep the Santa beard. You never knew when one of those would come in handy.
